Skills & Policy

The IoD Education Group hosted a webinar on Labour's skills policy priorities. Key issues included addressing skills shortages, reforming the apprenticeship levy, and aligning skills policy with industrial strategy.

Experts from major business organisations emphasised the need for better planning, investment in skills, and support for small businesses and self-employed individuals.

The discussion highlighted the importance of a cohesive skills strategy to drive economic growth. The panel called for government action to implement these priorities effectively.

SEND Overhaul

A report commissioned by councils recommends eight reforms to address the failing SEND system. Key proposals include a national regulator, clearer definitions of needs, and banning profits from state-funded placements.

The report highlights the urgent need for a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable system. It calls for better support and outcomes for children with SEND.

These reforms aim to create a less adversarial and more effective framework. This will help councils, schools, and parents better support children with additional needs.

Education Quality

Jotmans Hall Primary School in Benfleet has been rated "requires improvement" by Ofsted. Inspectors cited unclear teaching and curriculum gaps as major concerns.

The report highlighted issues in curriculum refinement, staff feedback, and communication with parents of SEND pupils. Despite these, behaviour and personal development were rated good.

The school is making significant improvements, but inconsistencies still affect the quality of education. The emphasis on attendance, happiness, and safety was noted as a positive aspect.

Mental Health & Education

Sector leaders have praised the King's Speech for its focus on children's mental health and education reforms. Key proposals include the Children's Wellbeing Bill and a landmark Mental Health Bill.

However, concerns were raised about the omission of social care reform and votes for 16- and 17-year-olds.

The speech also introduced a Crime and Policing Bill to protect children from criminal exploitation. Despite the positive reception, calls for further action on social care and early years education remain.

Childcare Costs

Research reveals UK parents will spend over 1,000 per child for summer holiday childcare. Costs are higher in Wales and south-east England.

Coram charity urges government to extend holiday care provision, especially for older children and those with special needs. Local authorities struggle to provide sufficient places.

The Department for Education acknowledges the issue, emphasizing the need for affordable and accessible childcare. The government will review funding in the upcoming budget.
